Self Esteem and Evil, the Connection

In his book,People of the Lie , Psychiatrist Dr. Scott Peck Peck describes evil as “militant ignorance” “Evil people are obsessed with maintaining their self-image of perfection through self-deception.”

Is high self esteem good? It is good, provided there is some truth that it is based on. How does evil enter into the mind of a good person? There needs to be a lie to hook into. A truly humble person needs no self esteem. Some degree of positive self esteem might be helpful because no one is completely humble. With the self concept, it is probably best to error on the positive side. To the degree, self esteem is built on fantasy, self esteem is not healthy at all.

At some point during the twentieth century it became the normal recommended mode to elevate the self esteem of all who are alive, especially children. Of course, this is not possible without lying to people about who they are and what they are worth to the world. This practice has not only continued into the twenty-first century, it has accelerated.

What makes a person good? I warn you, I am going to quote Jesus. I am not trying to convert anyone to Christianity. No one knows anything about God or the lack of a God and that includes me. We all do have the capacity to recognize the truth. What Jesus says about good is true, regardless of any pre-existing opinions of Jesus. Read the Beatitudes in the Book of Matthew.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Gospel of St. Matthew 5:3-10

Nowhere does he say blessed are those with high self esteem.

A false opinion of one’s self that is mainly based on lies told by others is an open door to your mind through which evil can enter. Entire countries have been destroyed by leaders who falsely cultivated a false sense of self esteem in their countrymen. NAZI Germany is a recent example.

Each of the Beatitudes describes a characteristic of humility. The humble are rewarded with peace. Others who reject humility are rewarded only with happiness which is temporary. Some whose self esteem is created and maintained by fantasy are vulnerable to the influence of evil.
